Seal Cove Auto Museum – Senior Mechanic/Volunteer mentor
Job Summary
The Seal Cove Auto Museum is seeking an experienced Auto Mechanic able to mentor and delegate to Volunteers leading the preservation, maintenance, and operation of its historic vehicle collection, with a special emphasis on automobiles (1895 – 1929, external combustion, steam and electric). This unique role combines hands-on mechanical expertise with educating the public, requiring a deep understanding of vintage automotive technology and the ability to engage diverse audiences in the museum’s mission and history.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Preservation & Maintenance
- Perform routine maintenance and diagnosis of antique vehicles, primarily from the Brass Era.
- Troubleshoot and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems specific to early automotive technologies.
- Fabricate or source custom and obsolete parts to ensure historically accurate preservation.
- Maintain detailed records of all mechanical work in accordance with museum conservation standards.
Education & Interpretation
- Conduct live demonstrations of vehicles, tools, and techniques during museum hours and special events.
- Serve as a subject matter expert, offering insights into the museum’s collection and the evolution of automotive technology.
- Collaborate with curators and exhibit designers to enhance interpretive displays.
Garage & Collection Management
- Oversee daily operations of the museum’s garage, ensuring safety and efficiency.
- Manage inventory of parts, tools, and supplies.
- Manage, mentor and train staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Support planning and execution of museum events and off-site vehicle demonstrations.
Research & Documentation
- Conduct historical research to guide preservation efforts and enrich educational content.
- Contribute to the museum’s technical archives and assist with artifact documentation.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or degree in automotive technology preferred.
- 5–7 years of professional experience as an automotive mechanic, with a focus on antique vehicles.
- Prior experience in a museum or conservation setting is highly desirable.
- Expertise in carbureted fuel systems, early ignition systems, and antique electrical components.
- Experience in public speaking or teaching is strongly preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate technical concepts clearly.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate various manual transmissions.
- Ability to perform physical tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to work with a diverse team of staff and Volunteers in a team environment
- Willing to travel out of state for events
- Knowledge and experience of rules and procedures of Judged shows and events

Compensation & Benefits:
This is a full-time, or part time hourly position, with flexibility for the right candidate. The offer will be commensurate with experience. This position does not include employee housing.
