"CREATE WEEK" WITH PEMETIC ELEMENTARY

When

04/22/2019 - 04/26/2019
3:30pm - 5:00pm

Where

Seal Cove Auto Museum
1414 Tremont Road, Seal Cove, Maine, 04674, Mount Desert Island

Event Type

An after school program for 4th-8th grade students from the Pemetic School in Southwest Harbor.

The unusual layout of the headlights, radiators, and chassis often make antique cars look like they have faces and distinct personalities. Students will work with visual and creative artist Liz Cutler from Art Waves and the Curatorial team from the Museum. They will learn the history of some of the unique cars in the collection, pick a favorite, and develop a personality profile of that car. Using that profile, they will then learn how to transfer what they see to a canvas in the form of a painting or a sketch. The artwork will transform a machine into an anthropomorphized creature with a personality, history, and story to tell. Inspired by their own art, students will work with author Carrie Jones to write a short story or poem about their automobile.

The week will conclude with a public exhibit celebration, hosted at ArtWaves. The Museum will host a special opening for the Children’s Art exhibit in the spring, and their artwork will remain on display with the cars for the 2019 season. At the end of the season, students will receive their works to keep.

A book will be compiled of the student’s artwork and writing as well, which will be given to each student and sold in the Museum store (with proceeds going toward the continuation of this project.)
